WINTER DRIVING – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Safe winter driving is
all about preparation. Before you take to the road in bad weather,
it’s important that both you and your vehicle are ready.
How to make your car winter-ready:
- Visit your service centre for a thorough maintenance check
that includes a battery test
- Top up all fluids
- Use a winter grade of oil
- Install winter tires (more and more people are realizing the
tremendous traction advantages of winter tires)
- Keep your fuel gauge above half full
- Test Antifreeze for proper freeze protection (based on
geographical location more protection may be required for severe
cold climates)
- If you have a block heater – ensure it is functioning
properly. If not – you can look into having one installed – it
will save you fuel, engine wear and tear and provide you quicker
cabin heat and warmth.
- Wiper blades – ensure they are in good state – wipers are
critical to keeping your windshield clean – some are designed
for ice and snow
- Replace your windshield washer fluid with appropriate winter
grade fluid
Here’s what you need to have on hand:
- A scraper
- An emergency road kit that includes flares
- Extra warm clothing
- Blankets
- Food and water
- Candles and matches
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
- Booster cables
- A HELP sign for display

If you are caught in a storm and become stranded in your vehicle,
here’s what to do:
- Remain inside your car
- Make your car as visible as possible
- Only run the engine periodically
- Make sure the exhaust is free of snow
- Use floor mats and newspaper to provide additional
insulation
- If someone is with you, take turns sleeping and keeping
watch
